Our Story

From inspiration to innovation — and a clearer focus for the future.

After building a successful advertising agency, entrepreneur and engineer John Herrick set out to find a new challenge — one where he could combine innovation, design, and real-world impact.

Inspiration struck during a journey through Europe. While visiting a friend in Germany, John was shown a compact home greenhouse attached to the side of the house. Built with lightweight polycarbonate panels instead of traditional glass, it protected vegetables effectively through harsh winters. The practicality and efficiency of the design immediately caught his attention.

As he continued travelling, John noticed that backyard greenhouses had barely evolved in decades. He saw a clear opportunity to create smarter, more modular, and more sustainable growing spaces for everyday New Zealanders.

Back home, he turned the idea into reality. After extensive prototyping and testing, the first Winter Gardenz greenhouse was launched — a modern kitset design built to withstand New Zealand conditions.

A new chapter begins

As demand grew for both residential and commercial greenhouses, it became clear that the business would benefit from greater focus and specialisation.

Winter Gardenz is now divided into two dedicated areas:

  • Commercial and custom greenhouse projects — delivered directly under the Winter Gardenz brand.
  • Kitset greenhouses — now proudly offered through The Greenhouse Company (GHCO).

This separation allows each business to specialise while maintaining the same high standards of quality, durability, and customer focus that Winter Gardenz has always been known for.

Our trusted kitset greenhouse designs remain unchanged. They are now supported by a dedicated team at The Greenhouse Company, with a new focus on making quality kitset greenhouses, tunnel houses, and growing solutions more accessible to New Zealand homes and gardens.

Looking ahead

While the business structure has evolved, our core values stay the same: quality materials, thoughtful engineering, and a genuine passion for helping Kiwis grow better.

Whether you're after a practical backyard kitset greenhouse or a large-scale commercial project, the same commitment to innovation and reliability continues — now delivered through two specialised companies.
